Columbia University is once again proud to host our annual Black History Month blood drives in honor of Charles R. Drew, M.D. (Physicians & Surgeons, ’40) – named by the American Chemical Society as “one of the most important scientist of the 20th century”. A pioneering African-American medical researcher, Dr. Drew developed methods of storing blood plasma for transfusion, and organized the first large-scale blood bank in the U.S. In 1940, he became the first African-American to earn a Medical Science doctorate (MSD) from Columbia.
