2022 Columbia-Barnard Spirit of 1968 Sankofa Prize

The Department of African American and African Diaspora Studies (AAADS) and the Sankofa Prize Endowment Committee are pleased to announce the 2022 Columbia-Barnard Spirit of 1968 Sankofa Prize. The prize was established by Columbia and Barnard alumni to celebrate students of African descent who made critical and lasting contributions to the struggle for racial justice on campus and in Harlem during the 1968 student revolt and continued to work for Black community empowerment throughout their lives.

The Sankofa Prize will recognize an undergraduate student registered at any school of the University who has made enduring contributions to promoting social justice for Black people through civic engagement, political activism and community building on campus and beyond. We especially invite the nomination of students who are taking courses in AAADS or have done so in the past.

The selection committee welcomes nominations from students, faculty, or members of the community of students who have demonstrated both a commitment to building empowering networks between the University and community, and show promise for continuing that work after graduation.

The nomination must be supported by at least (1) one letter of recommendation. Nomination and recommendation letters must address the nominee’s community engagement and empowerment efforts, and be submitted by September 30, 2022. The Sankofa Prize includes a financial award and a mentoring commitment from alumnae/alumni who were friends and comrades of student and community activist Zachary Husser (CC’70)
