Black Nations/Queer Nations? Shari Frilot's experimental documentary chronicles the ground-breaking1995 conference on lesbian and gay sexualities in the African diaspora. The conference brought together an array of dynamic scholars, activists, artists and cultural workers including Essex Hemphill, Kobena Mercer, Barbara Smith, Urvashi Vaid, Isaac Julien, and M. Jacqui Alexander to interrogate the economic, political, and social situations of diasporic lesbians, gay men, bisexual, and transgender peoples. ... Drawing upon works such as Isaac Julien's "The Attendant" and Jocelyn Taylor's "Bodily Functions," this documentary illuminates the importance of this historic conference for Black lesbians and gays. (Third World Newsreel).

A post-film discussion will be led by:

NADEGE GREEN - Miami-based independent researcher and community archivist. Her work centers the lived experiences of Black people in South Florida. Her practice and approach to storytelling is deeply rooted in history and first-person narratives that explore and connect issues around race, culture, climate justice, health inequities, poverty and displacement.

Dr. NAOMI COBB - Renowned anthropologist and community leader
