With great excitement, I invite you to my book salon for "Fighting for a Foothold: How Government and Markets Undermine Black Middle-Class Suburbia."
The event will be held on Barnard College’s campus (117th and Broadway) on Thursday, Oct. 8, from 5-7 p.m.
The evening will kick off with me discussing key takeaways from Fighting for a Foothold, which reveals the constraints majority-Black local jurisdictions encounter as they seek to garner sufficient tax revenue for high-quality public goods and services, such as public schools. After my presentation, I will be in conversation with Dr. Karida Brown, a preeminent sociologist of racial capitalism at Emory University; our discussion will include policy and other structural solutions designed for all Americans to flourish. We'll conclude with a book signing and reception. Fighting for a Foothold will be available for purchase through the local bookstore Book Culture. I’m also happy to sign copies of the book you’ve already bought.
INSTRUCTIONS for ATTENDING: please RSVP through the QR code included in the invitation above or through this link. If you are not a Columbia University or Barnard College ID holder, you will indicate that when you register, so that security can clear you for entry.
You're welcome—indeed encouraged—to share this e-mail widely!
Looking forward to seeing you on October 8th, if not sooner.
Warmly,
Angela Simms
